When I first moved from Italy to the United States, one of the things that surprised me the most was hearing about senior photos. I remember the very first time someone mentioned “senior photo sessions” to me, I was completely confused.
“Seniors?” I thought.
“Do they mean older people?”
A friend laughed and explained it to me:
“No! Here in America, high school seniors and college seniors celebrate their final year with a professional photo session. It’s a way to remember this exciting moment before starting a completely new chapter of life.”
The moment she explained it, I immediately fell in love with the idea.
In Italy, we do not really have this tradition of celebrating graduation years with personal portraits and senior photos. We might have one class photo at the end of school, but not an entire experience dedicated to celebrating who you are in that exact moment of life.
And honestly?
I think it is such a beautiful tradition.
I remember my own final year of high school so vividly. It felt like I was standing between two worlds. Part of me was still a teenager, attached to my childhood, my routines, my friends, and all the familiar things I had always known. Another part of me was already looking ahead toward freedom, adulthood, independence, college, travel, new friendships, and completely new experiences.
It was exciting and emotional at the same time.
I graduated during the incredibly hot summer of 2003, one of the hottest summers Europe had experienced. Right after graduation, I traveled to Greece with one of my best friends, and when I came back home, life suddenly felt so different. Everything was changing so quickly. I made a huge group of friends during that time, stayed out late, laughed endlessly, dreamed about the future, and felt that beautiful mix of nostalgia and excitement that only comes during certain moments of life.
To this day, it remains one of the most beautiful summers I have ever lived.
And the funny thing is… I barely have any photographs of myself from that season of life.
I have one class photo.
That’s it.
No personal portraits.
No senior photos.
No images that truly captured who I was becoming at that moment.
And honestly, that makes me a little sad now.
Maybe that is one of the reasons why I connect so deeply with senior photo sessions today. Every time I photograph a senior, I can feel all those emotions again through them. The excitement. The uncertainty. The confidence slowly growing. The dreams for the future. The friendships. The feeling that life is just beginning.
Senior photos are not only about beautiful portraits.
They are about celebrating identity, personality, growth, freedom, and the beginning of a completely new chapter.
That is why I love senior sessions so much.
I love creating senior photos that feel natural, stylish, authentic, and full of personality. I want every senior to feel confident, seen, and celebrated exactly as they are in this unique season of life.
Some seniors arrive shy and nervous at the beginning of the session, and by the end they are laughing, dancing, moving freely, and fully embracing the experience. Watching that transformation happen is honestly one of my favorite parts of my job.
And yes… maybe writing all of this makes me sound a little older now.
But honestly?
I still think senior photos are one of the coolest traditions ever, and I truly love being part of these memories for my clients.
