How to become a wedding photographer

As a professional wedding photographer who has photographed over 100 weddings, I know the best path to how to become a wedding photographer is not about shortcuts—it’s about experience, patience, and consistency.

I started my journey in 2012, and in 2015 I made the decision to leave my full-time job to fully dedicate myself to photography. I then worked in a photography studio for four years, where I learned not only technical skills but also how to work with clients and manage real wedding situations. After moving to Colorado, I opened my own business in 2020 and had to start again from the beginning—building my portfolio, my network, and my reputation from scratch.

This experience taught me something very important: if you want to understand how to become a wedding photographer, you need to stay humble. There is no fast track. You grow step by step, gaining experience, learning from others, and improving with every wedding.

1. Buy a DSLR Camera or a Professional Mirrorless

The first step in learning how to become a wedding photographer is investing in a professional camera. Choosing between Canon or Nikon or Sony is a personal preference—I personally use Canon.

A DSLR (reflex camera) gives you full control and quality. I recommend starting with a versatile lens like a 24–105mm f/4. It allows you to handle different situations, especially if you’re working alone. It’s perfect for both beginners and more advanced photographers.

2. Take a Basic Photography Class

If you haven’t already, this is essential. To understand how to become a wedding photographer, you need a solid foundation.

Learn the basics:

• Shutter speed
• Aperture
• Light
• Composition

You don’t need to know everything, but understanding light and how your camera works will completely change the way you see the world.

3. Build Your Network

Networking is a powerful step in becoming a wedding photographer.

Through photography classes, I met amazing people—some professionals, others beginners like me. It’s a great way to exchange ideas and practice in a relaxed environment.

Be humble and open to learning. When you meet experienced photographers, don’t hesitate to offer your help—you never know where it might lead.

At the beginning, you may work for free—and that’s okay. In Italy, we call it “gavetta”: working to learn. You gain experience while helping the photographer.

• Adobe Lightroom
• Adobe Photoshop

If you work in a studio, you might get access to these tools and guidance. Otherwise, you can learn through online tutorials or step-by-step guides.

Update 2026: There has been added to the market AI tools and AI softwares (Aftershoot – ImagenAI ) that has speed up the editing for many people. I personally continue to edit my images one by one, I use AI inside Photoshop only to eliminate objects or subjects that disturb the beauty of my image.

 7. Gain Experience as a Second Shooter

This is where things get exciting.

As a second shooter, you start taking real responsibility. Your role is to capture important moments from a different perspective.

At first, you may feel unsure—but over time:

• You’ll miss fewer key moments
• You’ll gain confidence
• You’ll become an asset to the main photographer

Be creative, but stay technically strong. This is a crucial stage in becoming a professional wedding photographer.

8. Invest in Professional Lenses

As your skills grow, you’ll naturally want more advanced lenses.

Different lenses help you achieve different effects:

• Background blur (bokeh)
• Wide-angle perspectives

But remember: great gear doesn’t make a great photographer. Master your basic lens first—this is what truly builds your skills.

9. Find Your Style

Now you begin to define your identity.

At this stage, you:

• Master natural and artificial light

You become more confident and start taking on your own work. This is where your signature style begins to emerge.

10. Start Your Business
