As Engagement photographer in San Diego, I know that a beautiful engagement session is about much more than choosing a scenic location. The styling, the light, the connection between the couple, and the way each moment is photographed all come together to create images that feel natural, refined, and personal.

When Ally and Daniel contacted me for their engagement session, they had recently gotten engaged and wanted photographs that would celebrate this special season in their lives. Together, we planned an elegant sunset session at Windansea Beach in La Jolla—one of my favorite San Diego locations for its dramatic rocks, open ocean views, and beautiful coastal light.

Planning an Elegant Windansea Beach Engagement Session

Before the session, Ally and I discussed the location, the atmosphere they wanted to create, and what they should wear. They brought two outfits in soft, neutral tones, which were perfect for the beach and complemented the natural colors of the sand, ocean, and sky.

Planning clothing in advance is an important part of the experience. The right colors and textures help create a cohesive gallery while still allowing the couple’s personalities to shine. For this session, the neutral palette gave the photographs the elegant and refined look Ally and Daniel envisioned. Exactly what my style of photography need to achieve the best results.

Natural Direction and Genuine Connection

From the beginning, Ally and Daniel were happy, relaxed, and easygoing. Ally brought such joyful energy to the session. She naturally encouraged Daniel to play, move, and have fun with her, creating spontaneous moments that felt completely authentic.

Daniel was sweet and warm, smiling easily and enjoying the simple direction I gave them. Rather than forcing couples into stiff poses, I guide them through movement and interaction. I may ask them to walk together, hold each other closely, play, or simply focus on one another. This allows me to capture real expressions and genuine connection.

I also include a few classic portraits looking toward the camera, creating a complete gallery that blends candid moments, cinematic compositions, editorial imagery, and timeless portraiture.

Photographing Golden Hour and Blue Hour in La Jolla

We began the session during golden hour, when the sunlight was warm, soft, and flattering. As the sun moved closer to the horizon, it illuminated the ocean and wrapped Ally and Daniel in a beautiful golden glow.

I photographed the first part of the session with my Canon R6 mirrorless camera and Sigma Art 24–70mm lens. This combination allowed me to move easily between intimate portraits and wider compositions while maintaining a soft, refined look.

Later, I switched to my Sigma 12–24mm wide-angle lens to capture the breathtaking scale of Windansea Beach. The wider perspective allowed me to photograph Ally and Daniel surrounded by the rocks, sky, and ocean as the sun disappeared behind the horizon and washed the water in delicate pastel colors.

After sunset, we continued into blue hour. The atmosphere became softer and more peaceful, and a completely different palette began to appear. The warm golden tones from the beginning of the session gradually gave way to pastel pinks, soft lavender, and cool blue hues.

Photographing both golden hour and blue hour creates a more complete experience and brings beautiful variety to the final gallery. Although every image belongs to the same story, the changing light gives each part of the session its own mood.

Creating Peaceful Photographs at a Popular San Diego Beach

Windansea Beach can be busy, particularly around sunset. There were other people enjoying the beach during Ally and Daniel’s session, but I photographed thoughtfully to keep the attention on them.

By choosing my angles carefully and making small adjustments during the editing process, I was able to create photographs that felt intimate and peaceful. The final images give the impression that Ally and Daniel had this beautiful stretch of the San Diego coast almost entirely to themselves.

A Beautiful Engagement Gallery Delivered in Just Over a Week

I delivered Ally and Daniel’s completed engagement gallery a little over a week after their session. Their collection included a variety of romantic close-ups, playful interactions, classic portraits, and wide cinematic views of the La Jolla coastline. I always deliver the couple selection plus more at my choice.
