As High School Senior photographer in Boulder CO one of the first things I hear from senior girls is:
“I don’t know how to pose.”
And almost every time, their mom smiles and says,
“That’s funny… she takes photos with her friends all the time.”
The truth is: most senior girls do know how to pose.
They’re used to iPhones, selfies, and being with their friends.
But when they step in front of a professional camera, everything suddenly feels different.
There’s pressure. There’s expectation. And that’s when the confidence disappears.
And that’s completely normal.

What I always tell them is:
You don’t need to know how to pose, that’s my job.
As a high school senior photographer in Boulder CO, my approach is very natural.
I don’t force stiff or unnatural positions.
Instead, I guide them gently and show a few inspiration images with simple, beautiful poses, ones that enhance their natural beauty without feeling forced.
Nothing complicated.
Just small movements, soft expressions, and moments that feel real.
We might walk, twirl, adjust a jacket, or play with the light…
and suddenly it doesn’t feel like “posing” anymore.
It feels like being themselves.
One of my favorite parts of the experience is showing them the photos as we go.
This changes everything.
When they see how beautiful they look on camera, something shifts:
They relax
They trust the process
They start to enjoy it
Sometimes they’ll say,
“Wait, can I fix my hair a little?”
or
“I want to adjust my dress like this.”
And I love that.
Because it becomes a collaboration.
We’re not just taking photos of them, we’re creating something together.

By the middle of the session, the energy is completely different.
They’re laughing. Moving. Suggesting ideas.
Sometimes even forgetting the camera is there.
What started as “I’m nervous” turns into:
“That was actually so fun.”
And that’s always my goal.

Confidence also comes from feeling comfortable in what they’re wearing.
I always suggest bringing:
One casual outfit (something that feels like their everyday self)
One more elegant or dressed-up look
Something connected to their hobbies or personality
This gives variety, but more importantly, it helps them feel like themselves.
And when they feel like themselves, everything becomes easier.
At the end of the day, this experience isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about creating a space where your daughter can feel seen, relaxed, and confident.
And when that happens, the photos naturally follow 🤍
